Hopi Polychrome Storage Jar by Paqua Naha, First Frog Woman

This impressive jar is signed with the distinct frog indicating it is the work of Paqua Naha, also known as the first Frog Woman. Paqua studied pottery-making directly under Nampeyo in the 1910s. This is a classic example of her yellow ware, which she worked in primarily before developing the white slip that she and her descendants became known for in the last few years of her life. Both the jar’s solid molding and abstract avian designs are exemplary of Paqua’s work. The jar is very evenly fired, expressing the full tonality from ivory to burnt orange that traditionally-fired Hopi yellowware pottery is known for, with the design reading bold and clean. The jar has a big presence, measuring 9 ½” height and 12” diameter, and is in excellent, original condition.
