Printed label on bottom states: "Monju-Bosatsu, Japanesese. God of Wisdom. C. 1820." There is untranslated Japanese script carved into the underside as well. One of four great Bodhisattva of Asia, Monju, shown with the mythical guardian lion/dog (shi-shi), personifies wisdom, the voice of Buddhist law, and wisest of the Bodhisattva. In modern Japan, students pay homage to Monju in the hopes of passing school examinations and becoming gifted calligraphers. Keyaki wood, pigments. 19th century.
