Prestige Stool, Mother and Child Caryatid - Lwena / Chokwe
Galerie Flak
As noted in the book Chokwe! Art and Initiation among Chokwe and related peoples. (Birmingham Museum of Art, 1999), the mother-and-child motif on this caryatid stool symbolically reinforces precepts regarding the matrilineal inheritance of royal titles. The female figure physically supports the chief seated on the stool, literally nurtures her child, and metaphorically sustains her community.
