Large Zuni Rainbird Jar, c.1880s

Steve Elmore Indian Art

This large Zuni jar with the classic rainbird design dates to the 1880s and measures a whopping 15" in diameter. The black pigment as well as the concave bottom of the jar have the chocolate brown hue that old Zuni pottery is prized for. The rainbird design is well-executed, with rainbirds flying around both the rim and the body of the jar. The jar has a nice shoulder and is superbly molded. There is some ethnographic wear on the piece, including chips on the rim from use in the village. It is fun to imagine the woman that would have carried water using this massive jar. The jar measures 11 3/4" height and 15" diameter, and has some minor restoration, although the signs of ethnographic wear (rim chips) have been left untouched.
