Zia Open Bowl with Deer by Virginia Salas, c.1925-35

This open bowl with the image of a deer was made by Zia potter Virginia Salas (1901-1984) in the 1920s or 1930s. Virginia was not a prolific potter, and pieces by her are rare. Other examples of her work feature similar realistic deer designs and impressive molding. This bowl was clearly made as an art piece, with its rim decoration and interior design, however the bowl is heavy like a utilitarian piece, and has a flat bottom.

The bowl measures 3 ½” height and 9 ½” diameter, and is in excellent, original condition. The bowl is signed on the bottom “By Virginia S.” An unusual example of Zia Pueblo pottery.
